7 questions for Matthieu d’Epenoux from Cocktail Games

After my first 7 issues dedicated primarily to creators , it was time to have a slightly different point of view with the side of the editors of  games . Then you will tell me that Mr d’Epenoux , business executive of Interlude company publishing Cocktail Games’ games, is also a creator because he created among other Contrario and Illico Presto ! Yes it is true that Matthew d’Epenoux is a creator but it is as a publisher he answered 7 questions.

Matthieu is the « boss » of a 4 people multinational who publish onto the market between 6 and 12 sets per year . Games that are quick, simple and almost all packaged in a small tin box that is easy to carry to your friends or family to share a moment of conviviality and good laughs. Many of these games have received rewards ( eg: the Spiel des Jahres 2013  to Hanabi ! ) And among the games that can be played from 5 years ( Fairy Tales … ) and  for certain and with up to 20 players or more ( Comedia , Killer party, …), you will find family games, collective games, educational games or strategic games that can be played for 15 minutes to 45 minutes.

It goes without saying that you will find your happiness in games published by Cocktail Games .

Here are 7 questions for Matthieu d’Epenoux

1 – How old were you when you played your first board game and what was it ?

« At age 10 I guess. I remember the classic game of Monopoly and 1000 Bornes played in family. I also played with my father  lot of game of «Attack» which is a very close game «Stratego» . « 

2 – Why and how did you decide to edit/publish board games ?

« Let’s say this is a bit accidentally . The game of «Interlude» I created in 1997 with the idea of ​​bringing the game into companies through structured activities designed to meet the need for internal and external communication. The company started with difficulties and exploded in sales in the second year . Who says organized games , says challenges and also says lots. And it is clear that the games I bought as lots does not suit me. I had in  drawers a game called Contrario (co- created with Roberto Fraga and  Odet l’Homer ) I decided to edited but without the desire to put it in a traditional distribution network. As returns on this game were excellent, I approached a few shops and Descartes network has decided to distribute it. This is where I learned what is to be a distributor, distribution margins and a lot of other things. As it worked we continued with Illico Presto, Unanimo and then the top 10 handheld games. This happens! »

3 – What are your 3 favorite games and why ?

« They are very different :

Quoridor one of the best games that is abstract

Ticket to Ride, family game by excellence

Durch die Würste, a game more complex than the previous two but which is great. « 

4 – For you what is the best combination to be published / edited successfully ?

« Having a good idea … This is where it starts and around which it articulated itself … « 

5 – How to proceed to publish a game ?

 » Edit a game is to evaluate the risk and the chances of success of his  » unborn baby .  » Even if there is an irrational share in any product , you should try to « secure » its maximum investment in testing including non complacent environment for fair returns on the thing and either improve the draft or discard it . You must also be satisfied that the product you are about to put on the market is the best that you have ever published so far without it being necessary to change business. I think the professional sector is too jaded , that sense of wonder is becoming increasingly scarce and there is a tendency today to take the final customer (who is our boss, do not forget ) for a pear that can be pressed when we need him. »

6 – What advice would you give to someone wishing to be published / edited ?

1) Believe in your idea ;

2) Observe the tests of his game without participating and draw appropriate conclusions ;

3) Open your eyes and look at what is happening in France but also abroad.

In short be curious about everything …. « 

7 – Could you give us some information on your next project ?

« In the pipes, MIMTOO FAMILY, a version for younger MIMTOO.

Also KALEIDOS JUNIOR ( same remark as for Mimtoo ) and Perlinpinpin , the French adaptation of Sleeping Queens is published by Gamewright and a huge card game in the United States. »
