All what the games creators and illustrators do will be nothing without the work of these roughly 400 specialty games shops in France.
Excalibur was founded in 1990 by Lionel and his wife Michèle Moutin. This shop is located in the heart of the old Montpellier in a small pedestrian street. The inside could make you think about an old castle with its stone walls, beams and stone arches. The choice is huge for this relatively small shop: traditional games, role playing games, Wargames and of course board games. Lionel and Michele and their team are always there to guide you and also to organize tournaments or other events. You will also find one or two games in demonstration.
It is therefore important to highlight this store and also to have the answers 7 questions with their point of view. Excalibur is the first shops that will be highlighted here.
Here are the 7 questions answered by Lionel and Michèle Moutin from Excalibur Montpellier:
1- How old were you when you played your first board game and what was it ?
« My first board game was the game of the goose with my grandfather and I keep lasting memories, I must have been 4 or 5 years old. Lionel and my husband was playing cards with his great-mother when he was 5 years old. We both have families of games players. «
2- Why and how did you decide to create a store of board games ?
« Lionel has created the store because he was obviously passionate about games and especially because he loves the trade and contact with people, just like me. We love to share and to live our passion. «
3- What are your 3 favorite board games and why ?
« Houlala! Our 3 favorite board games!! But it is impossible to answer this question!! We are too much of games players to select 3 games!! We will say Montjoie! Full metal planet, Super Gang ….. for old games, for newer: Keyflowers, Trajan, Civilization ……. for ….. very very recent: Concept, Brussels, Augustus … after ….., 7 wonders, Kaleidoscope, Octoverso, The Pillars of the Earth …….. etc … «
4- For you what is the best combination for a successful game ?
« The best combination for a game: ambiance, simple rules, short gaming time and the design. «
5- How did you create your game store ?
« To create the store …. we launched a die 100!! and the result was good! So we launched it! Joking aside, we studied the market, there was no shop as we imagined in Montpellier. This is to say that brought together all the games that we love, from games of dice or simple card games to strategy games and RPG for insiders. We took a management training, accounting and we put a lot of will and a touch of madness … »
6- What advice would you give to someone wishing to create a games shop ?
« What advice to create a boutique, hard to tell these days! Not be utopian, a game store that is not a cakewalk, there is nothing easy. These are hours of work, forget the 35 hours per week*.
Find a strategic location that has a future. Love human contact and share your passion everyday. Keep abreast of all the news and not be left behind. Be an excellent manager. «

7- Could you give us some information on your next project ?
« Our next project, bringing board games in schools as a teaching aid, gather families around a table with games to recreate rich links, by communicating and trading. Get people out of the virtual screens and to return to more concrete things, even if we move with the times, human values will always be the best the game has always been present in humanity. «
