Today, I am fortunate to have another person behind the creation of games that you all know. Who does not know the Timeline or the Cardline series? The author of these games is none other than Frédéric Henry.
Frédéric has also created other games as well like The Adventurers, Asteroyds and most recently in another small tin, The Builders Middle Ages. This is an artist who for 10 years has many success which is a just reward for his creative works. It’s games cover all kinds of styles but always with simple rules. The pleasure of playing his games is guaranteed immediately.
So here are seven questions for Frederick Henry.
1- How old were you when you played your first board game and what was it ?
« I would say 7 years old. It was the sadly ordinary game of the goose. »
2 – Why and how did you decide to create board games ?
« Just by accident. Everything came from a very good friend, Guillaume Blossier, who once suggested that we try to jointly create a game. I didn’t know anything about ‘modern’ board game then, but the idea of brainstorming immediately attracted me. The underlying idea was obviously a publishing project. «
3 – What are your 3 favorite board games and why ?
« The Jarnac, Scrabble and Poker. The first two because I love word games and I’m a big fan. The latter because I studied it a lot for years and this is the game I’m playing the most. «
4 – For you what is the best combination for a successful game ?
« Fortunately, it is difficult to answer the question. A priori I would say a strong ratio interest/ complexity. For me, a good game should combine depth and simplicity. »
5 – How do you procceed to create a game ?
« On a purely personal basis, the genesis of a game comes down to a notebook, a table in a coffee shop and a few liters of espresso. All else is literature. »
6 – What advice would you give to someone wishing to create a board game ?
« I know this opinion is very minor and controversial one, but I think it is important to maintain a relatively stripped game culture. Field seems far too young to need to draw on internal sources of inspiration, when so many other worlds teeming with events just waiting to be translated into playful systems. «
7 – Could you give us some information on your next project ?
« I am currently working mainly on three projects in parallel. First, The Builders Antique, is a core version of The Builders Middle Ages. The game will be released by Bombyx for the first week of September.
The second, with Space Cowboys, is a very big figurines game with boards that fits into a fans well-known universe of sword ‘n sorcery.
The third is a collaboration with the brilliant Cyril Demaegd we should disclose in Cannes, in a style in wich we are not expected a priori.
Finally, in the background, I continue to work to expand the Timeline and Cardline ranges for Asmodee and Bombyx. So, overall, a very busy schedule. «
Thank you Frédéric for taking the time to answer the 7 questions.
