Today I take you in the south of France, Nice to be more precise where Chris Boelinger lives. Chris is an author of games and also the co-founder with Jean-Charles Mourey of the publishing company Ludically. He loves sports like kite surfing among others.
Chris has created over 40 games like Earth Reborn, Halloween Party and Archipelago (including an extension War and Peace coming out mid-March 2014). But Chris is best known for Dungeon Twister and its countless versions and extensions. A site is dedicated to this game and the very large international community.
Here are 7 questions for Chris Boelinger.
1 – How old were you when you played your first board game and what was it?
“The first game, hard to say … Probably the ponies when I was 5 years old. But the first real memory remains Risk at the age of 7/8 years old.”
2 – Why and how did you decide to create board games?
“I started to create games very young, around the age of 8 years old as well. Early single goose games improved, then a kind of futuristic war-games. I created just because I wanted to, for pleasure, to stay busy, to play with my friends at the time, because I was a hyperactive and that I needed to stay busy …”
3 – What are your 3 favorite games company and why?
“Difficult question because usually I have a top 5, but then you ask me to come down to a top 3, difficult to keep only three of the 5!
Magic the Gathering
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
4 – For you what is the best combination for a successful game?
“A strong and well respected and transcribed theme.
New and original game Mechanics
Little chance and a lot of control
Strong interactivity between players.
Now this is the recipe to seduce me personally, not at all say that this is the recipe for a game that will sell millions of copies! To this should be added: Quick and easy game. But this is often incompatible with the criteria mentioned before.”
5 – How do proceed to create a game?
“Not a very particular method …. Most often I start with the theme and I try to translate the rules of this theme, effects and events of this theme in game rules and game mechanics When I have all the elements that fit well, then only I get everything on paper or in the computer. Then come the calculations, the PAO and the proto. Then I invite friends to play, and I adjust if necessary. Conventional method, at the end anyway ….”
6 – What advice would you give to someone wishing to create a board game?
“Test with a lot of varied people, then enter the contest creators of games like Boulogne Billancourt in France 😉 ”
7 – Could you give us some information on your next project ?
“A party game for adults called Illegal, in which each player is a resources dealer such as illegal drugs, call girls, weapons, etc … A game of wholesalers, of entanglements, of informers, of detectives … A game that plays in 25 minutes flat, simple, fun, entertaining and surprising … Photos are visible in preview on my Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chris.boelinger ”
